Ms. Monaghan focuses her practice on counseling clients on state and federal individual, business and corporate taxation issues with a particular focus on mergers and acquisitions and general corporate and commercial matters, assisting foreign businesses investing in the United States through direct investments, joint venture operations, partnerships, research and development agreements, or licensing and distribution arrangements.
Ms. Monaghan also advises clients on the structuring and application process of charitable and other tax-exempt organizations. As part of her practice, Ms. Monaghan represents taxpayers in civil tax controversies, including administrative audit and appeal and voluntary disclosure matters and represents clients before the U.S. Tax Court.
Ms. Monaghan’s experience also includes counseling clients under government investigation for federal and/or state tax fraud and other federal crimes, including money laundering, and activities covered by the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, representing clients through all phases of criminal investigation from responding to administrative and grand jury subpoenas to negotiating plea agreements and implementing corporate operational restructuring, tax and other compliance programs.
Prior to joining Wuersch & Gering, Ms. Monaghan was a senior associate in the international and tax practice groups of Alston & Bird LLP and a member of the tax practice and litigation practice groups of Hodgson Russ LLP. In addition, Ms. Monaghan was an editor and author at Thomson Reuters where she wrote and revised editorial analyses and/or explanations of tax and related law.
